Rewrites and some thoughts on Kickstarter

The revised table draft of Episode 101 is available in the Scripts section. One of the big notes from the first table reads was that people really liked the cold open structure from the first episode, so I’m incorporating that into episodes 102 and 103. The other thing is that the middle of 102 is a bit slow. The rewriting continues.

I’ve spent a good chunk of the last week educating myself about Kickstarter.com and checking out similar projects. After struggling through the creation of the video, we’re almost ready to launch the Kickstarter campaign.

I don’t know what possessed me to think that I should have as few edits in the video as possible. It really doesn’t matter. The videos that I think are most effective have the principles talking directly to the camera making their pitch. That’s what I have now, and I’m considering either re-shooting it or at least re-cutting it.

Episode 2 Table Read

This one is a bit rough. The actors didn’t have a lot of time to look over the script before we read it, and it needs some work in the middle.

101 Table Read

In the spirit of showing the process, warts and all, I’m posting the table read for the rough table draft of episode 101.  The actors were reading this fairly cold so it’s not a smooth performance, but it was very helpful in identifying the weak areas of the script.

In case you’re wondering about the setup, we shot it around the table at my place. I did end up syncing the sound from two podcasting mics patched into a 4-channel mixer going out to an Olympus digital recorder.

Read the original script and the rewrite here.

Logos and Rewrites

So we have a mock-up of the Extreme Improv logo:

Tell us what you think.

I’m also working on the rewrites with notes from the table read.  The general consensus was to handle all the cold opens like the first episode.  So 102 and 103 need those done, and 102 needs some cutting and tightening.  103 was seven and half pages, but it clocked in at under 6 minutes, so it can stand a little fleshing out.

Table Reads and KickStarter

Saturday morning we had our first table read, and it was such a great time.  The core of the cast was together for the first time, and it was fun to hear the scripts come to life with real actors reading the parts instead of the voices in my head.

Mike and I also started working on the Kickstarter video.  Outtakes to follow…

Table Read Tomorrow

Very Exciting.  The first three scripts are done, and tomorrow is the first table read.  Four of the five  primary roles are cast.  It’s starting to come together.  Getting the SAG paperwork together, and working on the KickStarter video tonight with Mike.

The Journey Begins…again

Mike and I decided to give the no-budget web series another shot.  Our first effort at producing a web series based on our experiences with Name Change Pending was a real learning experience.  What did we learn?

  • Have complete control of your work product
  • Have complete control of your locations
  • Keep your cast small
  • Write simple scenes with fewer than 4 actors per shot
  • Control the equipment
  • look through the viewfinder for every shot
  • Get good sound, or better
  • Find a good editor, or be prepared to become one

Those are highlights of what we’ve learned.  We’re forging on with better scripts, a tighter reign of production elements, and a song in our hearts.
